According to ancient beliefs, Goddess Parvati performed intense penance to attain Lord Shiva as her husband. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva granted her the boon. This is why Gangaur symbolizes Gan (Shiva) and Gaur (Parvati) and is celebrated with devotion.
