Union Minister of Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, today visited India’s largest and the world’s second-largest coal mine located in Korba district. During his visit, he observed the coal excavation and transportation processes at South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) Gevra mine. He also familiarized himself with the modern techniques used in coal production and explored the loading and transportation activities by boarding a shovel machine and dumper.

During his visit to the surface area of the mine, he witnessed coal cutting using a surface miner and personally examined the quality of coal by holding it in his hands. The Minister also reviewed the silo operations in the Gevra coal area and got the information about coal loading into trucks.

Coal Extraction and Transportation


Union Minister Shri G. Kishan Reddy reviewed the initiatives in coal production, transportation, technological integration, community development, and environmental conservation in the SECL region through a PowerPoint presentation at the Gevra mine viewpoint. SECL officials present at the site also shared future plans aimed at increasing coal production. Additionally, they provided the Union Minister with a comprehensive overview of all activities in the mining area.

Union Minister Shri G. Kishan Reddy stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the country is working with complete transparency and determination to meet its energy needs while ensuring environmental interests are fully considered. He mentioned that today he visited India’s largest and the world’s second-largest coal mine, Gevra, for inspection. During his visit, he observed the dedication and hard work of the officials and employees who are fulfilling the nation’s energy requirements even under challenging conditions.

He emphasized increasing coal production and highlighted that, for the first time since independence; an action plan for mine closure activities has been initiated under the directives of Prime Minister Modi. Over the next three years, efforts will be made to align with environmental standards and develop greenery in the region. On this occasion, the Union Minister also honoured outstanding employees of SECL and engaged in discussions with SECL workers, addressing their demands and suggestions.
